Installing it takes a drill. The sensor mounts inside the door of your mailbox, so a complete install means drilling one or two small holes in the box. Most folks are done in about twenty minutes. Make sure you're allowed to modify your mailbox before you order.
Alerts are sent by SMS text message to the phone number you provide at signup. Configurable quiet hours (so a 2am alert doesn't wake the house) are planned as a feature on the customer portal — not required to use RFD Alert today.
Will it fit your mailbox?
RFD Alert mounts a small sensor inside your mailbox door and runs a short wire to the controller, so the install needs a way out of the box and something to mount to. Most rural boxes — on a wood or metal post, on a bracket, on an arm — are fine.
What does not work: a mailbox set into solid brick, stone, or concrete. If the body of the box is mortared into a column and you can't reach behind or beside it, there's nowhere to run the wire and nothing to mount the controller to. A brick base or a decorative surround is fine as long as you can still get at the box itself.
